For the second day in a row, Columbus City Schools will release students early on Tuesday due to predicted high temperatures.

A late September heat wave has caused several days of 90-plus-degree temperatures in the Midwest. Many district buildings, meanwhile, do not have air conditioning.

Columbus City Schools will again release middle and high school students at noon on Tuesday, and send home elementary school students at 1 p.m.

Athletic contests, practices and other extra-curriculars were also canceled on Monday. But Columbus Recreation and Parks Department offered extended hours for its community centers, and Central Ohio YMCA branches provided regular services to students.

Tuesday, high school activities and sports will continues, according to Columbus City Schools Public Information Officer Scott Varner. Middle school sports will still be cancelled. Varner says high school athletes will train Tuesday because part of conditioning is August is for hot temperatures.
