Ohio's official unemployment rate increased slightly last month, though another survey of employers shows the state added just over 5,000 jobs.
State labor officials say Ohio's unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in August, up from 5.2 percent in July. That means about 11,000 more workers were unemployed, which means out of work but actively looking for work.
It's the highest unemployment rate since September 2014.
Brett Crow, with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, says that Ohio is working to create jobs, despite increases in unemployment.
"It's important to make note that the state added 5,200 jobs," he says.
Jobs in educational and health services, as well as art, recreation and entertainment, reached all-time highs in August. The biggest job losses came in trade, transportation and utilities, and in state and local government.
Ohio's unemployment rate in August was 1 percent higher than the national unemployment rate. In the past 12 months, Ohio has seen the number of unemployed increase by 29,000.
