Construction of a new rental car facility is scheduled to begin next year at John Glenn Columbus International Airport. It’s the first phase of a decade-long plan that will culminate with the opening of a new terminal.

The $106 million rental facility will be built on 10 acres near the airport’s Blue Lot and Cell Phone Lot.  When completed in 2019, rental operations will vacate the parking garage.

Airport spokesperson Angie Tabor says that means a 40 percent increase in public parking spaces in the garage.

"Currently rental car operations are taking place in levels one and two of our parking garage," Tabor says. "So once the new rental car facility opens we’ll be able to claim those two levels for public parking."

Tabor says that by 2030, a sky bridge will connect the rental car operations with a brand new terminal.
