Ohioans can now carry concealed guns into more places. A new state law taking effect on Tuesday lifts blanket concealed carry bans at daycare centers and colleges campuses, although schools and businesses will still be allowed to ban guns if they want.
Leaders of Ohio State University and most other public universities have said they’ll continue to ban guns from their campuses.
The wide-reaching law also relaxes laws for concealed carry holders in airplanes, public areas of airport terminals, and school safety zones.
The law bans businesses from prohibiting someone with a concealed handgun license from transporting or storing a firearm in their vehicle.
Senate Bill 199 passed along party lines and sharply divided gun rights advocates, who hailed it as a victory for the Second Amendment, and groups that favor more gun regulation. The Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence and some other groups argued relaxing gun bans would make schools and workplaces more dangerous.
The Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police and the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association opposed the changes, while the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association supported them.
