Current, Former OSU Wrestlers Bumped From Iran Tournament Over Trump Travel Ban

Ohio State University

Two wrestlers with strong ties to Ohio State are being banned from a tournament in Iran.

OSU junior Kyle Snyder became the youngest gold medal-winning wrestler ever when he dominated his weight class in Rio last year. Former OSU wrestler Logan Steiber is one of the few wrestlers in NCAA history to win four individual national titles.

But neither will take part in the Freestyle World Cup in Iran later this month.

The Islamic Republic News Agency quotes a spokesman from Iran’s foreign ministry as saying they want to differentiate between American people and the “hostile policies” of the U.S. government, but they ultimately decided to oppose the inclusion of American wrestlers because of recent visa and refugee restrictions signed by President Trump.

Iran has vowed reciprocity until the U.S. travel restrictions are lifted.
