A member of the State Board of Education has resigned because he's leaving Ohio and has used his departure to voice concerns about problems that he says will continue to plague the state's schools.
Former Montgomery County auditor and judge A.J. Wagner resigned Friday. The Dayton Daily News reports he'd served on the board for two years and advocated on behalf of high-poverty schools and urban districts.
The board president says Republican Gov. John Kasich will appoint someone to finish Wagner's term through 2018.
In his resignation letter, Wagner praised Kasich but said he thinks Ohio will be haunted for years by funding and teacher shortages, unnecessary testing and other issues. Wagner also advocated for more pre-kindergarten education, tighter oversight of charter schools and flexibility in graduation standards.
