Columbus school officials today start their official campaign for a levy on the November ballot. Issue 57 would bring in hundreds of millions of dollars for the district, even though it’s the smallest of four levy options considered by the school board.
It would raise annual property taxes by about $240 for every $100,000 of home value. The majority of that money would fund an expansion of general operations over the next five years.
It would also fund a backlog of building maintenance that’s been put off for several years.
The last Columbus school levy to go before voters in 2013 was overwhelmingly rejected by Columbus voters after the district asked for much larger funding increases that would have, for the first time, been shared with charter schools.
