City Officials Promise Thorough Investigation Of 13-Year Old's Shooting

Columbus Police promise a thorough investigation into the police shooting of a 13-year-old boy Wednesday evening who allegedly pulled a BB gun from his waistband.

Police say Tyre King was pursued as an armed robbery suspect on the Near East Side and was shot several times in an alley when he pulled what appeared to be a real gun.

Mayor Andrew Ginther says city officials will meet with community leaders.

"There was a meeting, actually, just this morning that our Community Relations Commission shared some of this information with faith leaders. We are going to organize another group meeting with a another larger group of faith leaders," Mayor Andrew Ginther told reporters on Thursday.

King, who was black, was killed by Officer Bryan Mason, a white nine-year veteran of the force. He’s on administrative leave and will undergo psychological counseling, both of which are department procedure.

It’s also procedure to forward all fatal police shootings to the county prosecutor for consideration.

Police confirm Mason was also involved in the fatal shooting of a North Linden man in 2012.
