Applications Being Accepted For Charter Review Commission

The City of Columbus says it’s now accepting applications for a new charter review commission. Mayor Andrew Ginther created the commission in the lead-up to a special election.

Ginther formed the commission less than a month before an initiative to overhaul city council went before voters. The proposal would have moved council from an at-large body to most members representing individual wards or districts.

Many saw Ginther’s move as a way to scare voters away from gutting city council, and it might have worked: that measure lost by a nearly three-to-one margin.

Ginther says the charter review commission will consist of seven community members who’ll study city government and potentially recommend changes, including to the structure of council.

They’re expected to make recommendations by early next year. The deadline to apply for the commission is August 26.
