This school year Ohio students entering the 7th and 12th grades have a new vaccination to get.  The state now requires an immunization for meningococcal diseases.

A meningococcal infection is rare but can be life threatening.  Doctor William Long, a Columbus pediatrician, says there’s about a 20 percent chance of permanent neurologic damage or limb loss and about a 15 percent chance of death for those who come down with a meningococcal infection.

Long says there’s been a steady stream of young people receiving the vaccine.

“I’m seeing children not only come into my office but I’m also getting reports from pharmacies that have given vaccines to my patients,” Long says.

Long calls the vaccine safe and effective. He says it’s also affordable.

“It is not horribly expensive compared to some of the other vaccines.  The vaccine is covered by all insurance plans including all Medicaid plans.  And the vaccine is available for those who don’t have insurance through the Vaccines for Children program,” Long says.
