Contract Dispute Leads To $2M Settlement For Dorm Construction At Ohio Schools For Blind, Deaf

The Ohio School Facilities Commission and an architect will pay a contractor $2 million to settle breach of contract claims stemming from the construction of dormitories at the Ohio State School for the Blind and the Ohio School for the Deaf.

A judge approved the settlement Tuesday after a referee ruled in favor of TransAmerica Building Co. The company claimed the commission caused delays and more work beyond the scope of its contract.

The referee ruled TransAmerica was owed the money because the state agency dragged out the $44 million construction project due to "politics and budgeting problems."

The company filed a lawsuit against the commission seeking $3.8 million in damages after the agency withheld payments.

The referee ruled against a countersuit by the state.
