Some Ohio cities are offering recreation centers, senior centers and other facilities as cooling sites to help residents beat the heat this weekend as temperatures are expected to be in the 90s and feel even hotter.
Officials in Columbus and Dayton said recreation centers would operate as cooling sites during their regular hours Saturday. Toledo said its city pools would have expanded hours so all of them are open Sunday afternoon.
Some officials also are reminding residents that many public libraries have air conditioning.
Health officials have encouraged people to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness. They've urged residents to drink plenty of water and show extra care for children, the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions who might be especially susceptible to effects of the heat.
