Columbus police say two plainclothes officers have shot and killed a man who opened fire on them.

Police say the officers spotted two men standing on a street corner Monday night, and one had a gun.

A witness told police that the officers got out of their unmarked car with their badges displayed and ordered the man to drop his gun. Police say the man ignored their commands and opened fire. The officers returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officers were not hurt.

Police say they detained the second man for questioning. No charges are pending against him at this time.

Police have not released the suspect's name, pending notification of his family.

The shooting remains under investigation.
