Ohio Judge To Divide Slain Motorist Settlement Among Family

Hamilton County Sheriff's Office

A southwest Ohio judge is deciding how to divide a $4.9 million settlement among the family of a black motorist shot and killed by a white University of Cincinnati officer during a traffic stop.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports more than 20 family members of Samuel DuBose are seeking a share of the wrongful death settlement reached in January. A Hamilton County judge said last week he'll issue a ruling at a court hearing.

Forty-three-year-old DuBose was fatally shot last July in his car last year by officer Ray Tensing, who was subsequently fired. He's pleaded not guilty to murder.

The school has agreed to provide free undergraduate tuition for DuBose's 13 children. An attorney has recommended that 12 of the 13 children receive 90 percent of the money.
