A vigil for a Columbus police officer fatally shot when a man opened fire on a SWAT team trying to arrest him drew more than 400 people.

The candlelight vigil for Officer Steven M. Smith was held Sunday evening along the banks of the Scioto River in Columbus.

The Columbus SWAT officer was shot in a standoff April 10 and died two days later. Forty-four-year-old Lincoln Rutledge is charged with aggravated murder in the slaying. The public defender assigned to the Columbus man has declined to discuss the charges against him.

Sunday's vigil began this week's memorial activities for Smith. His funeral is scheduled Tuesday.

Police also say Smith's name will be carved on a stone memorial as the 54th Columbus police officer to die in the line of duty.
