Columbus officials say a new eight story downtown office building will be named for former Mayor Michael Coleman.
The building at 111 North Front Street is scheduled for completion late next year.
It will be called the Michael B. Coleman Governmental Center.
Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther praised Coleman for his contributions to the city during his 16 years of service.
“It seems only fitting that a building that will help to transform city government offices be named after him,” said Ginther.
Coleman helped to create the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation, Early Start Columbus, Neighborhood Pride, Summer Safety Initiative and many more programs. Coleman also formed the Affordable Housing Trust and repurposed the Northland Mall complex.
“I always dreamed of Columbus having a Downtown campus of city government buildings. Not only is that vision becoming a reality, but it will bear my name. I simply do not have the words to express my gratitude,” said Coleman.
The new building will house Building and Zoning, Public Service, Development and some Public Utility offices. It will cost an estimated $73 million.
