Preliminary autopsy results indicate Ohio State student Austin Singletary died from a broken neck during the annual Mirror Lake jump on Ohio State's campus.
Singletary, a third-year student from Dayton, was pulled from the lake early Wednesday morning. He died at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center later Wednesday morning.
A coroner has ruled a broken neck is the cause of death for an Ohio State University student who died during the Mirror Lake jump earlier this week.
Franklin County Coroner Anahi Ortiz says additional testing will be conducted on 22-year-old Austin Singletary to make a final determination of his death.
Ohio State says it will move to end the annual lake jump which has raised safety concerns for the school. It has been a tradition for students since the 1990s.
Update 3:15 p.m.
Ohio State said Austin Singletary died during the Mirror Lake jump. Singletary was a third-year student from Dayton.
There are few details about the events that led up to Singletary’s death or the cause of death.
OSU’s public safety director Vernon Baisden said Singletary died from “injuries” several hours after he was pulled from the lake. Singletary was treated at the Wexner Medical Center.
In an email, OSU president Michael Drake said, “we are heartbroken over this horrible tragedy.”
There are calls to discontinue the Mirror Lake jump. A statement from the university reads, “We must … acknowledge that while this is a student-led tradition that has been passed down through the years, we cannot risk another tragedy.”
Counselors are available to students through the holiday weekend.

"Unfortunately after several hours of medical care, the young man removed from Mirror Lake early this morning has passed away from his injuries," Baisden said. "At this time, the university is doing everything it can to identify the deceased. He is African American and medium build with tattoos on his left upper chest and right upper arm."
Ohio State Police are asking anyone with information about the identity of the man to contact them at 292.2121.

Ohio State University says a man is in critical condition after going into cardiac arrest during the annual student jump into Mirror Lake Tuesday night.
The man’s name and age were not immediately released.
Police shut down last night’s event after the man was pulled from the lake.
The event is held every year during the week of the OSU-Michigan football game.
