The decision to push back execution dates for a dozen condemned killers for a year or more has angered supporters of the death penalty in Ohio. And it has some state lawmakers considering new methods for execution.
The prisons department says it had to delay the executions because of difficulty in finding lethal injection drugs.
Some lawmakers who support the death penalty – including Senate President Keith Faber (R-Celina) – say it’s time to consider a method other than lethal injection.
“I’ve heard everything from using heroin to using nitrogen to going back to the electric chair,” Faber said.
“That’s a debate that probably we need to have.”
Sen. Bill Seitz (R-Cincinnati) has said he would work with the prisons department to add a change to the execution process into one of the bills he’s already proposed, such as the one that would ban executions for the seriously mentally ill.
