The Columbus Diocese reports it will review its personnel procedures. The move comes after a former Bishop Watterson teacher was arrested, last week, on child pornography charges linked to a Columbus student.
The Columbus Diocese said, in the future, employer references will undergo a review process.
Brian Sze, 34, a former music teacher, faces federal production of child pornography charges.
The Diocese said it fired Sze, in June, after it learned about inappropriate texting with a student, but Sze was given a good reference, by a supervisor, for a teaching job he took, in Seattle.
In an emailed statement, the Diocese writes it “deeply regrets that [the Seattle] school unknowingly was made a part of Mr. Sze’s deception when applying for employment,” and that “procedures will be improved for situations when improper conduct becomes known.”
U.S. Marshals likely will bring Sze back to Ohio to stand trial. He faces up to 30 years in prison if he is convicted.
