Democratic Party Leaders Decide On Redistricting/Issue 1

ohiostatehouse.org

The Ohio Democratic Party will decide Saturday where it stands on a proposed overhaul of Ohio's redistricting system.

The party executive committee's decision on Issue 1 Saturday will end months of uncertainty over the party's endorsement. A screening committee urged support last month.

Democratic and Republican support for the measure had initially seemed guaranteed because it stemmed from a historic bipartisan deal struck by state lawmakers last year. The new setup aims to recast Ohio's legislative map-drawing rules amid acknowledgements by both parties that the current system fosters partisan gerrymandering.

But some Democrats worried the proposed changes would disadvantage their party long term. Chairman David Pepper has said the party is now satisfied it's done its "due diligence" to review the plan.

The Ohio Republican Party endorsed the issue earlier.
