A group that wants to reinforce term limits is one step closer to the ballot.
Attorney General Mike DeWine has approved language that the group “Eight is Enough” would use on its petitions, but the Ohio Secretary of State and the Ballot Board need to sign off before a signature drive can begin.
The proposal would stop a lawmaker from serving any longer than 12 years total. And that lawmaker can only spend eight years in a certain chamber.
Under current term limits, a lawmaker can serve in one legislative chamber for eight consecutive years. That lawmaker could then return to the same chamber after a two-year break or run for office in the other chamber.
Opponents say longer term limits and office swapping plays to the advantage of entrenched politicians.
There’s another effort that would increase term limits. Supporters of that fight say it helps build more institutional knowledge and better relationships.
