It's been more than a week since Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams voluntarily recalled all of its products after Listeria was found in some of it. But the love for Jeni's hasn't waned. Many people have left "love notes" on the Short North's scoop shop door.
One woman promises to eat several hundred tons of Jeni's when production resumes. Someone else confesses "major ice cream withdrawals" with the hastag "love4jeni's."
Many others promise a return to the scoop shop nestled in the Short North: "[We] Drove from Morgantown, WV for Jeni's. We'll be back."
On a road trip with college friends, Michigan student Kwamme Yankson pledged to return, too, to try the ice cream he's only heard about.
"But this has to be a part of the Columbus experience," he said. "We have to come back."
Carl Ahlm from Springfield showed friends from Florida around the Short North. Jeni's was on the itinerary. He knew about the recall.
"We thought maybe it was over by now. So we were stopping by in hopes that it was open," Ahlm said. "So we'll try it again some other day."
Jeni's plans to destroy 265 tons of ice cream. Listeria was found in two ice cream flavors. There's no timeline for when production may resume.
