Recommendations from a panel studying how to update police training in Ohio are set to be announced Thursday. They're expected to target some Ohio police academies.
Records show each of three panels in the group studying possible changes to police training has suggested reducing the number of training academies in the state. Data show only about one in three Ohio police academies have a student success rate of 75 percent or more.
A task force subcommittee has suggested changing the state's system of students paying tuition at Ohio community colleges. That's angered some police chiefs, training instructors and community college representatives.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine formed the task force after some police-involved deaths in Ohio, including the shooting of a 12-year-old boy in Cleveland and the shooting of a man in a Dayton-area Walmart store. Both were holding what turned out to be toy guns.
