Democrats are mourning a man they consider a giant of Ohio politics. Ohio Public Radio’s Jo Ingles reports on the way Paul Tipps is being remembered.
Back in the early 70’s, Paul Tipps was the Chair of the Montgomery County Democratic party. In 1975, Tipps was elected Chair of the state’s Democratic Party.
Under his time as the party’s leader, both U.S. Senators were Democrats as was the majority of the congressional delegation. He was also in charge when the Statehouse was last dominated by Democrats in both the House and Senate at the same time…..and when he stepped down in 1983, Ohio had Democrats in almost every statewide office, including the governor’s office.
He went on to establish an influential lobbying firm in Columbus, staying involved in the party throughout that time.
He has been in hospice care in recent weeks and died, surrounded by his family.
