Protest follows discovery of Salmonella at Ohio farm

Members of an animal rights group say they'll protest at the corner of Broad and High Streets tomorrow. The move follows the discovery of Salmonella at a central Ohio egg farm.

The test results that confirm the presence of Salmonella in an egg from Croton-based Ohio Fresh Eggs have become a rallying cry for the group Mercy for Animals. They say the strain of the deadly bacteria is evidence that factory farms are dangerous to public health, pointing to cramped living areas that they say held spread disease among chickens and other animals.

The contaminated egg led to a massive recall of nearly 300,000 eggs, although none were distributed in Ohio. The Ohio Poultry Association is assuring customers that eggs are safe, especially when cooked.
