Ohio lost a major political figure suddenly on Friday, when chief justice Thomas Moyer died less than a day after being admitted to a Columbus hospital for what were thought to be non-life-threatening health issues. Moyer was the nation's longest serving state Supreme Court Chief Justice.
Ohio Public Radio's Bill Cohen has been following Moyer's career since he was elected to the bench in 1987, after serving on the Columbus Board of Education and being appointed to the Franklin County Court of Appeals by his boss, Republican governor Jim Rhodes. And Cohen tells Ohio Public Radio's Karen Kasler that Moyer used his reputation as a political peacemaker to campaign for chief justice.
Gov. Ted Strickland will appoint a replacement chief justice till a new leader of the court is elected in November.
