Local and state officials have announced a package of incentives today to help a discount airline get going in Columbus. Skybus has said it plans to fly to 25 cities from its Columbus hub, using a model aimed at competing with Southwest and other no-frills airlines. State officials say the company wants to build a corporate headquarters and other facilities that would create nearly 900 jobs. The state plans to provide a $16,000,000 package of incentives so Skybus can get started.
A DePaul University transportation expert says Columbus would make a great base because of its closeness to other large markets. But aviation consultant Michael Boyd questions whether the Columbus market needs another low-fare carrier.
