2 Kaufmann's, 1 Macy's in Columbus to close

Federated Department Stores Thursday announced plans to close three Columbus stores. The company which owns Macy's will close the Macy's store at the Eastland Mall as well as the Kaufmann's stores at the Polaris and Tuttle malls.

In all, Federated is closing 66 stores it calls duplicate locations in 66 malls across the country. Company officials say the stores will close in 2006. The move is part of Federated's acquisition of Kaufmann's parent company - May Department Stores.

A total of about 550 people work in the Columbus stores set to close.

The Macy's store at Eastland mall - which was named Lazarus has been open for 38 years.

Earlier this year federated changed Columbus area Lazarus stores to the Macy's name.
