Highway shooting suspect caught in Las Vegas

Las Vegas police say someone recognized a man suspected in two-dozen sniper shootings at a casino last night and called authorities.

Police spokesman Jose Montoya says Charles A. McCoy Junior was arrested this morning after he returned to his motel room near the Stardust casino. The man who tipped off police says he knew immediately it was the right person. Conrad Malsom says he and a friend were eating a large pizza at a sports gambling site at a popular casino, but couldn't finish the whole pie. He tells Associated Press Radio that he offered some of the leftovers to a man sitting nearby. Malsom says that's when he realized that the man was McCoy. He says McCoy looked "haggard," was unshaven and was wearing a black t-shirt and jeans. Malsom says he watched McCoy for a while and then contacted police. McCoy was later arrested at a motel. Malsom says it appeared McCoy was reading U-S-A Today -- which was featuring a story about him. Police believe McCoy had been in Las Vegas for about 24 hours.

Police are interviewing McCoy and are waiting to get a search warrant to look in his car and motel room. McCoy's sister and brother-in-law say they're he is safe in police custody.

McCoy's sister, Amy Walton, told NBC's "Today" show this morning that she's relieved her brother didn't hurt himself.

Authorities have said McCoy has a history of mental health issues.

Palmer says McCoy is being processed in the Las Vegas but the FBI. office.
