Authorities: Highway shooter hits van in Madison County

Authorities say a van shot at Tuesday in Madison County is linked to a series of highway shootings near Columbus.

It's the first case outside of Franklin County and about 15 miles south of where most of the shootings have taken place. It is the 21st linked case.

Franklin County Chief Deputy Steve Martin says the van was traveling on Interstate 71 near state route 56 when a bullet hit the windshield.

Martin says a bullet fragment recovered from the van was a ballistic match. He says law enforcement patrols will be increased in the two counties.

Most of the shootings have been at cars, school buses and homes on or near a section of Interstate 270 south of Columbus. One woman was killed in November.
