For seven months, there will be no one sitting in Ohio’s 8th Congressional district seat, which officially opened up with Speaker John Boehner’s resignation Saturday night.
Gov. John Kasich has set a special election for June 7, with a primary election, if necessary, on March 15, the same day as the presidential primary.
It will be the first time in a quarter century there won’t be an incumbent on the ballot.
And already several Republicans have expressed an interest – Sen. Bill Beagle, Rep. Tim Derickson, Butler County Auditor Roger Reynolds are the officeholders who say they’ll run, along with residents Scott George and Eric Gurr and JD Winteregg – the last two ran against Boehner in 2014.
A Democrat hasn’t won that district since 1932.
