Video: Gord Downie on his love for Great Lakes

Gord Downie
Gord Downie

Gord Downie was more than the lead singer for The Tragically Hip, more than a Canadian rock icon.

Downie, who died recently of brain cancer, also was a great friend of the Great Lakes. Especially Lake Ontario, where he learned to swim.

In this video, made for the (he was a board member and loyal supporter), Downie explains why the lakes are so important to him and his fellow Canadians. He also notes that his first swimming lesson taught him the meaning of revenge -- funny stuff.

And if you aren't familiar with Downie and The Tragically Hip, check out the first song in this video from  Woodstock 99. From all the Canadian flags in the crowd, you'll understand how popular he was back home.
