COSI and WOSU Announce New Episodes for “QED with Dr. B” to Start May 12
COLUMBUS, OHIO, MAY 7, 2021 – The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) and WOSU Public Media, a PBS affiliate station, are excited to share new episodes of QED with Dr. B Wednesday nights starting May 12. Hosted by COSI President and CEO Dr. Frederic Bertley (“Dr. B”), a globally renowned researcher and immunologist, the remaining eight episodes of season one will continue to feature one-on-one talks with scientists, engineers, and innovators from across the globe around innovative science topics that impact our daily lives. The series airs Wednesdays at 7:30pm on WOSU TV (channel 34.1) or online anytime at wosu.org/QED.
On the May 12 episode (‘Everyday AI’): We hear so much about artificial intelligence, but how does AI really live up to its promise to enhance our everyday lives? Way more than just powering your social media feed, AI is actually very sophisticated – from robots that help teach special needs children to algorithms predicting the risk of breast cancer.
On the May 26 episode (‘The Science of Taste’): Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams founder Jeni Britton Bauer talks with Dr. B about her ingredient-driven style of ice cream-making that relies on the science of combining unexpected flavors. Then, sitting down with professors and scientists across various fields, Dr. B helps us understand the neurological basis of taste, how our physiological perceptions help us choose what we eat, and how packaging maintains food safety and flavor.
QED, which stands for Quod Erat Demonstrandum, or Quite Easily Demonstrated, was inspired by Dr. Bertley’s lifelong commitment to improving science literacy at every age. In QED with Dr. B, Dr. Bertley, a thought leader in the fields of applied science, science education and community engagement, seeks to connect people to complex science topics in an easily digestible, unintimidating and exciting way.
“While we can’t wait to re-open COSI’s doors to the community on June 3, this TV show has been a fantastic way to keep the community engaged in really important, groundbreaking science topics and ideas in a way that only COSI and WOSU can,” said Dr. Bertley. “The feedback we’ve received – not only from people in Central Ohio but across North America – shows just how important this kind of content and programming is for people of all ages as the importance of science literacy has been squarely in the spotlight in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“We’ve been thrilled with the incredible reception and support the program has received since it premiered in January,” said Tom Rieland, WOSU general manager. “Our theory that this community was hungry for growing an understanding and appreciation for cutting-edge scientific research and discovery was absolutely spot on. We’re wrapping up the first season in a significant way with incredible experts, fascinating topics and masterful storytelling.”
