ProMusica pulled out all the stops in celebrating their 40th anniversary, including the completion of their two-year Beethoven Cycle.
Thankfully, they have made a series of concerts broadcast last year, hosted by our own Boyce Lancaster, available to us at Classical 101 to keep us company on Sunday afternoons in May and June.
The season featured five Beethoven symphonies, along with a completion of the sketches Beethoven made for a 10th symphony.
You’ll hear violinist Vadim Gluzman, pianist Angela Yoffe, and principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra Mark Kosower in a performance of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony and Three Places in New England by Charles Ives round out the program.
Fiery Venezuelan-born pianist Gabriela Montero has a particularly inspiring story, as she speaks out about how her native country is being destroyed from within. She and ProMusica perform the World Premiere of Babel alongside Mozart’s 14th Piano Concerto.
Composers have used melodies and themes written by others as inspiration for centuries...Vivaldi’s Four Seasons has served as the launching point for many. ProMusica will present Max Richter’s take on the well-known classic with violinist Alexandra Soumm in a program that also features Beethoven’s 4th Symphony.
Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth brought two works to the Southern Theatre–Seraph for Trumpet and String Orchestra by celebrated Scottish composer Sir James MacMillan–and Haydn’s popular Trumpet Concerto. ProMusica’s Beethoven Cycle continues with his 6th Symphony, the Pastoral.
And that’s only part of the season! It’s a full season. And certainly worth an encore broadcast.
Boyce Lancaster hosting wonderful performances by ProMusica, conducted by David Danzmayr, with creative partner Vadim Gluzman. And no mention of ProMusica is complete without acknowledging the wonderful Janet Chen, the orchestra’s general manager. Janet, David, Vadim and Boyce. Now there’s a team.
Here’s Boyce in a Zoom chat last week with David Danzmayr and Vadim Gluzman:
