Beethoven and Shostakovich on Classical Showcase

Shostakovich

The next Classical Showcase on Friday evening at 7 on Classical 101, will present two great works: Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G and Symphony No. 5 in D Minor by Dmitri Shostakovich.

Recorded in concert last year at Carnegie Hall in New York,  Mitsuko Uchida will be the soloist in the Beethoven concerto and Mariss Jansons will conduct the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in both works.

Enjoy this great German orchestra in two masterpieces from times of major crises in the composers' lives. Beethoven's growing deafness was about to end his career as a performer around the time this concerto was first performed in public in 18o8 in Vienna, and Shostakovich was able to redeem himself from censure by Stalin and the Soviet authorities in 1937 in Leningrad with his Fifth Symphony.

Join us for Beethoven and Shostakovich on Classical Showcase Friday at 7 on Classical 101.  Here's the Bavarian Radio Symphony and Mariss Jansons with a Hungarian Dance by Johaness Brahms:
