This Friday’s program, recorded June 21 of last year, features violinist Joshua Bell with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s conducted by Cristian Macalaru.
The concert opens with a rarely-heard work by Gyorgy Ligeti, regarded as one of the most important avant-garde composers of the second half of the 20th-century. The Concert Romanesc (Romanian Concerteo) is a relatively early work from 1951.

The more familiar Violin Concerto in D-minor from 1904 by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius shows off the skill and artistry of Joshua Bell and the orchestra to good effect, and the youthful and exuberant Symphony in C by French composer Georges Bizet, written when he was just 17 years old, concludes the concert.
Next week’s concert from the Caramoor Festival will feature music of Wagner, Elgar and Dvorak. Classical Showcase airs Friday evening at 7 here on Classical 101.
