Classical 101

Cellists David Finckel and Luis Biava in the Classical 101 studios

The New Albany Symphony has a wonderful treat in store for Central Ohio music lovers. Cellist David Finckel is their special guest for the final performance of their fifth season, April 6 at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the  Arts in New Albany. Classical 101 listeners get a special sneak peek as David Finckel, along with the symphony's conductor/cellist Luis Biava, will be in the studio with me on Friday morning at 9am for music and conversation. David Finckel, who has played with the Emerson String Quartet for 34 years, is leaving the highly-respected ensemble in order to devote more time to his personal artistic endeavors. Not the least among them is his musical collaboration with his wife, pianist Wu Han, with whom he performs around the world.  Together, they serve as artistic directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Musica @ Menlo Chamber Festival and Institute, and provide artistic guidance for the Chamber Music Today festival in Seoul, South Korea.  The two talented musicians perform Brahms, above, and budding cellists can get a taste of what it might be like to take a class with David Finckel below. David Finckel will perform two pieces Saturday evening. Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations, with Luis Biava conducting the New Albany Symphony, and a Vivaldi Concerto for Two Cellos and Orchestra with Maestro Biava leaving the podium to perform with Finckel. Don't miss David Finckel and Luis Biava Friday morning at 9am on Classical 101, and Saturday evening at 7pm with the New Albany Symphony Orchestra.  Details are available at newalbanysymphony.com. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNiudiSjbQE
