Here is the first of what we hope will be a regular feature on the new Classical 101 website: a roundup of some top classical music stories we've been following.

Columbus Commons Grand Opening Tonight

Tonight marks the grand opening of Columbus Commons, a new nine acre public park on the site of the former City Center mall in downtown Columbus. The event tonight is a showcase of local music with festivities continuing through the holiday weekend. The Picnic with the Pops outdoor concert series is slated to move to the new Columbus Commons for the 2012 season.

Zambello New Artistic Advisor at The Washington National Opera

The Washington National Opera has announced new members of their leadership team for next season. Topping the list is new Artistic Adviser, Francesca Zambello, who replaces outgoing Artistic Director Placido Domingo. The new leadership team at the WNO is rounded out with the appointment of Executive Director Michael Mael.

New Music in New York

New York's Q2 presented a live concert Tuesday night (archived online) featuring premieres and performances of rarely heard works by Jonny Greenwood, Phillip Glass and Gyorgy Ligeti. Greenwood, best known as guitarist for rock band Radiohead, presented the premier of his Doghouse for orchestra and string trio and the concert also featured the New York premiere of Philip Glass’s “Heroesâ€? Symphony and a performance of Ligeti’s rarely-heard Chamber Concerto for 13 Instruments.
