The new station was kicked off by none other than Ohio State University President Gordon Gee. Here's what he had to say:
This morning, weâre proud to bring to the airwaves the first new public radio station in Columbus in over a half century. At 101.1 on the FM dial, Classical 101 is the hub of a network of all-classical radio stations providing the beauty and power of the greatest music ever created. Classical 101 will enhance the performing arts of central Ohio by being a pathway to greater involvement and by engaging a new generation of classical listeners through broadcast, online and public engagement initiatives. As part of Ohio Stateâs land-grant heritage, our goal is to improve our communities, to enrich lives, to expand possibilities. Classical 101 accomplishes all three of those goals as it reaches over 2 million Ohioans with this unique and valuable service. Congratulations to WOSU and to the Columbus community!
Then WOSU's Boyce Lancaster took over to introduce the first piece of music to be played on the new station, John Rutter's "Gloria", have a listen: [powerpress] [caption id="attachment_17963" align="alignleft" width="540" caption="WOSU staff members toast the launch of Classical 101 on the morning of December 15, 2010."]
