Learn How Urban African-American Girls Experience the World

The goal of the Rise Sister Rise research project is to identify the  relationships, school performance and significant adults in their lives of urban, African-Americans girls. It also devises strategies that will help the girls navigate a path to success and well being. Listen to their stories of trauma and resiliency, with Rise Sister Rise Project Principal Investigator Fran Frazier, OSU Literacy Studies Professor Dr. Elaine Richardson, and Ohio Department of Mental Health Hospital Community Continuity of Care Coordinator Leslie Brower.

The documentary The Souls of Black Girls explores how media views African-American women and how that, in turn, affects the way they view themselves. Director Daphne Valerius interviewed everyone from friends to experts to celebrities such as Jada Pinkett Smith. but the most difficult, the most reluctant subjects were a group of high school girls she interviewed as a focus group before she began filming.
