The closure of the Pixelle paper mill in Chillicothe has been paused until the end of the year, U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno posted on X on Friday morning.
"I just got off the phone with HIG Capital and am thrilled to announced they have agreed to PAUSE the closure of the Chillicothe paper mill until the end of the year," Moreno, the Ohio Republican, posted on X. "I look forward to working with them to find a solution that guarantees the well-being of Ohio workers."
H.I.G. Capital owns Pixelle Specialty Solutions, which told the state on Tuesday that it would be closing the paper mill and eliminating 826 jobs.
Moreno sent a letter to the company leader on Thursday, ripping them for what he called their "collective greed and/or inept business choices."
The layoff date was to be June 13.
A statement on Pixelle's website said the closure of the Chillicothe mill was "a difficult but necessary decision due to unsustainable financial challenges at the Chillicothe location. The result will leave us with a business that is better positioned to ensure that we maintain our competitive position in the marketplace."
