Callers in central and southeast Ohio’s 740 area code are beginning to need 10 numbers to make local calls as preparations are made for the addition of a new 220 area code in about a month.
The 220 area code is being added in the 30-county region that comprises the 740 area code because the 740 area code will soon run out of numbers. Instead of being split off, 220 is being added to the 740 area as an overlay. That means people making local calls were being required to dial 10 numbers starting Saturday.
The 380 area code will be added to the Columbus area next year as the 614 area code runs out of numbers.
