The United States on Friday officially rejoined the Paris Agreement on climate change. The landmark 2016 accord is designed to limit global warming and avoid its potentially catastrophic impacts.

The change is part of the president's plan to reshape U.S. foreign policy to center "on democracy, human rights, and equality," Secretary of State Antony Blinken says.

The Senate returns for the first time since the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. Five committees will question nominees to lead Defense, State, Homeland Security, Treasury and the top intelligence post.

The president-elect's history-making picks include the first Latino nominated to head the Department of Homeland Security and the first woman to lead the intelligence community.

Blinken served as deputy secretary of state and deputy national security adviser under President Barack Obama. The announcement came along with a number of other national security picks.
