Advocates and lawmakers hope the new number will be as easy to use—and remember—as 911 is now.

Discussing mental health and suicide was once taboo, but in recent years the stigma associated with mental health issues has lessened. Getting help has now been made easier — The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has a new name and number. Now people can access help from the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling 988.

Modeled after 911, the new three-digit number is designed to be a memorable and quick number that connects people who are suicidal or in any other mental health crisis to a trained mental health professional.

Today on Wellness Wednesday, we discuss how a name and number change could improve suicide prevention.
