On Monday, the Trump administration penned a memo that temporarily pauses federal grants and loans beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday, telling agencies to analyze their spending.

That appears to affect Ohio State University. The university, along with state government, agencies and nonprofits are trying to figure out how they will be affected.

Asked about what it means for Ohio State, university spokesman Ben Johnson wrote WOSU in an email that $700 million of the university's $1.5 billion in research spending in 2023 was federally funded.

That includes support for cancer research, artificial intelligence work and energy research.

Johnson also said that federal student aid provides crucial financial support for many students.

Johnson stated the university is monitoring developments and has established a web page with information for researchers.

NPR reported on Tuesday that federal agencies, states and other organizations that receive money from the federal government are scrambling to understand the details of the memo that appears to halt federal funding and grant programs.
