Opening statements expected Wednesday in murder trial of former CPD officer Adam Coy

Former Columbus Police officer Adam Coy was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with the murder of Andre Hill.
Franklin County Jail

Opening statements are expected Wednesday in the murder trial of a former Columbus police officer, who shot and killed Andre Hill, an unarmed Black man in December of 2020.

Adam Coy has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, reckless homicide, dereliction of duty and felonious assault. The trial was postponed because Coy was being treated for Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys worked on selecting a jury Monday and Tuesday in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

Police body camera footage from the shooting shows Coy fired his gun seconds after Hill turned around to face officers while holding a cell phone. Officers, including Coy, failed to administer aid to Hill for more than 10 minutes after he was shot.

The jury will be tasked with determining if Coy acted reasonably as a police officer when he shot Hill.

The city of Columbus paid Hill's family $10 million -- the largest settlement in city history.

The shooting led to the passage of Andre's Law, which requires Columbus police officers to activate their body cameras and provide first aid if a person is hurt by an officer.
