The State Medical Board of Ohio has suspended the license of a Mount Carmel neurosurgeon the board said inappropriately treated patients.
A Feb. 12 letter to Dr. Jeffrey Hatef said the board determined that his continued practice "presents a danger of immediate and serious harm to the public."
The board cited three surgeries from 2024.
In one case, a 78-year-old woman died after spine surgery. The patient lost three liters of blood. The board said her death was "reasonably predictable" given her age and poor health.
The board said the case should have been referred because of the severity and complexity of the patient's spinal deformity, along with her age, health factors and the magnitude of the procedure.
In another case, a 77-year-old woman also died after spine surgery. The board said the post-operative complications and death were reasonably predictable given her age and health issues. It said that case should have been referred as well.
In a third case, the board said the surgery on a 72-year-old man was unjustified given a lack of support in medical records and the patient's health issues.
The board could permanently revoke Hatef's medical license. He could request a hearing.
Mount Carmel says it has suspended Hatef's clinical privileges and placed him on administrative leave.
