A former Columbus police officer pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday for charges related to him deactivating or removing his body-worn camera.

Court documents said 35-year-old Nicholas P. Duty, of Commercial Point, turned off or removed his body cam during interactions with two women on Oct. 21, 2023 and March 22, 2024. In one of the incidents, Duty was engaged in a sexual encounter.

Duty pleaded guilty to destroying or altering records related to a criminal investigation.

Duty was working with other Columbus officers investigating prostitution crimes along Sullivant Avenue on the city's west side, according to officials.

The plea agreement includes a sentencing recommendation of 18 to 48 months in prison.
