Ohio State revelers burn seven couches, storm Ohio Stadium after National Championship win

Editor's Note: This story has been updated to reflect that Ohio State fans were let into Ohio Stadium.

Multiple couches were the casualties of celebrations in and around Ohio State University's campus following the Buckeyes' win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday.

An OSU spokesman told WOSU a crowd of hundreds of fans were let into Ohio Stadium that night too. The group stormed the field after police let them in as part of a crowd control strategy.

"Police are still working to monitor all areas of campus. The crowd at the stadium is dwindling. Police remain on site. At its peak, there were a few hundred on the field. No injuries or arrests at this time that I am aware of," OSU spokesman Dan Hedman said.

One flaming piece of furniture was extinguished by Columbus firefighters at the corner of North High Street and 9th Avenue just after midnight. Firefighters quickly responded to the fire, spraying it with a fire hose to put the flames out.

Another couch, accompanied by an ottoman was set ablaze after 1 a.m. at the corner of Indianola Avenue and Lane Avenue.

Columbus Division of Police told WOSU on Tuesday morning that public safety officials responded to seven total burning couches around Columbus last night.

Hundreds of students took to the streets after the Buckeyes 34-23 win, prompting Columbus Division of Police to shut down North High Street near 14th Street across from the Ohio Union.

Most of the revelers cheered and danced in the street to the music from nearby bars. Some people climbed light poles and sat on top of Central Ohio Transit Authority bus stop shelters.

Most wore Buckeyes gear and many chants of "O-H-I-O" echoed in the night. Fireworks also boomed in the skies into early Tuesday morning.

Temperatures hovered in the low single digits that night. The frigid air didn't seem to deter the crowd.

Polly Antrim, an Ohio State student studying landscape architecture, came home from a bar to find a couch burning right outside her apartment at the corner Lane Avenue and Indianola Avenue just before 1 a.m.

"I got home from the game earlier and the couch had been set on fire and they were putting it out," Antrim said.

Antrim said an hour later she smelled smoke again and came outside to see an ottoman or another piece of the couch had also been set ablaze next to the smoldering ruins of the couch.

Antrim said she felt Columbus firefighters did a great job responding. She said she didn't feel worried.

"I feel like stuff pops off all the time," Antrim said.

Columbus Division of Police did not respond to a request for comment.
