A police shooting in the Hilltop neighborhood left one man in critical condition after he allegedly assaulted a Columbus police officer with a weapon.

Police were called to an apartment in the 1600 block of Sullivant Avenue just before 11 p.m. Wednesday on a report of domestic violence where a man had assaulted two people.

Columbus police said an officer shot Michael Lamont Frierson who was experiencing a mental health crisis and assaulted officers as they attempted to arrest him.

Frierson was last reported to be in critical condition at Grant Medical Center as of Thursday morning.

Police have not released the name of the officer citing Marcy's Law, did say the officer has been with the division for four years.

Columbus police said in a statement that the man refused to come outside when officers arrived at the scene and made contact with him. The statement said officers kicked the door open to take the man into custody to protect the other people inside the apartment.

According to police, when the officers entered, the man attacked an officer's face with a "potential weapon in his hand." One officer fired multiple times, struck the man and gave him first aid until medics arrived.

Columbus police have not returned calls seeking clarification about the shooting. WOSU submitted records requests for body camera footage and 911 calls from the shooting.

It is not known what the "potential weapon" was or if CPD attempted to deploy any of the department's alternative response teams that are used in response to people experiencing a mental health crisis.
